Yoga for hot summer days

According to Ayurveda, summer time is the Pitta season – which can express in your body e.g. through agitation, low digestive fire (agni) and skin irritations.

Among other characteristics Pitta types are sharp, eloquent and ambitious and have athletic body shapes. If your constitution is pitta dominated, you might want to think about adopting a seasonal routine during this summer.

Here are some practical tips for your yoga practice to find back into balance:

- Try to practice during the cooler and darker hours of the day - early morning or evening

- Practice without expectation or judgement, maybe just give 70% instead of pushing to your limit

- Stimulate your solar plexus area, integrating backbends like bhujangasana (cobra) or dhanurasana (bow), as well as side bends and twists

- Introduce sheetali to your pranayama practice - the cooling breath

- Cultivate a sense of playfulness to soften your “sharp edges”

In general shade yourself, drink plenty of liquids and eat tastes like sweet, bitter and astringent.
